Welcome!

I'm so glad you found this little corner of my world. It's brand new (I'm a bit slow with this sort of thing) so I hope you'll visit often as I add things more frequently now.

I'm probably best known for my unique portraiture, photo journalistic weddings and telling real life stories with a twist.  I am in love with natural light and passionate about challenging myself with new ideas that are unique and quintessentially you.  Really.  I love what I do.

I dream in color.

I cry at weddings.

I laugh at 6 year old's jokes.

I'm passionate about living a full life.

I cherish family above everything else.

I'd go my whole life in bare feet if I could.

I love the way babies smell.

I wear a Mickey Mouse watch.

I live in Haddonfield, NJ with my husband, 2 dogs, 2 cats and my son who is is college.  I genuinely love meeting new people so please introduce yourself.  I look forward to meeting you!

To My Fellow Photographer Peeps: A PSA

This blog post is long overdue. A little less than a year ago, I had the happy coincidence of being in the same place and time as Susan Stripling. OK, as it turned out it was more happy than coincidental. Anyway… I didn’t know who she was. She was just this terribly sweet, lovable person who was happy to help me figure out a new technique on my camera. I was a bit more consumed with wrapping my head around this “thing” than who she was.

She asked to look at my LCD and then she exclaimed “You got it! That’s beautiful!” and suddenly I realized I had no idea who this person was and probably should introduce myself.

I extended my hand, “Hi, I’m Shari DeAngelo, by the way. Thank you.”

She replied, “I’m Susan, nice to meet you too.”

“Susan Who?” I asked

“Susan Stripling.”

I don’t know if I was jumping up and down first but the next thing I knew she and I were jumping up and down saying, “Yay!” all kinds of silly excited.

Now, I’m not the jumping up and down type. Seriously, I’m not. I knew who she was and was a fan of her work. She was actually the very first wedding photographer whose name I knew. I have no idea why she was jumping up and down.

But that’s what Susan Stripling will do to the people who meet her. Trust me. This is tried and true. I’m guessing there will be hundreds of brides and grooms who will agree with me on this. Her passion, energy and love for people and creating beautiful imagery is infectious. It comes as no surprise that she is one of the most sought after wedding photographers today.

I could go on and on about what Susan has taught me in the short time I’ve known her, but I actually have a really good reason for gushing on about her inside a blog post, usually reserved for photos.

She’s been putting out a series called Think Book Magazine (delivered electronically via pdf) which are geared towards the wedding photographer who may be interested in different approaches to difficult scenarios, such as lighting. I’ve gleaned much more than lighting and technical tips from her pages, and I’m guessing those, like me, might too. Personally I think her tips cover much of what any location shooter is faced with. In her latest edition (book #3) she includes 5-8 images from selected weddings with a full description of how each image was composed, lit, what equipment she used (and why)and includes exif data from the image. She then adds additional background information to follow her train of thought through the processes of each. What’s fabulous about this is that she covers all the problems she was facing. You’ll read it and say “oh yeah… been there” and probably, like me, wish you read this first.

So there ya have it, my first PSA (Photographers Service Announcement?). If I didn’t tell you, I’m afraid some may never know. She’s pretty low-key about advertising these things herself.

If you don’t know who Susan Stripling is, you should visit her blog here. The link to her Think Book Magazine series can be found here. She’s RSS worthy, by the way. It occurred to me, today, while going through the latest in her series (#3) that I only paid $1 per page and I gotta tell you, it’s worth more than that to me.

One last thing, as I shamelessly plug my new friend. Susan was kind enough to invite me to one of her workshops and I recommend them to anyone looking for a fresh new look at lighting, wanting to learn more about engaging yourself in the process of weddings or anyone just starting out in the Wedding Photography business. She’ll amaze you with her candid approach to dealing with issues that range from marketing yourself, processing workflow and client interactions. She packs a lot into one day and every attendee felt they got more than they paid for. Bring a notebook! She’ll give you tips about technology, albums, and then you’ll go off shooting what you’ve learned!

End Shameless Diversion. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Shannon and Chris, June 14th

I’ve been told that if it rains on your wedding day, you’ll have a blessed marriage.

Meet the luckiest, most blessed couple I know this year.

It was just a passing storm, I thought. But I was wrong. Flash flooding and sheets of horizontal rain meant our planned Informals weren’t meant to be. Still it was the most beautiful ceremony and the church was gorgeous. And a little rain didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of the bridal party or wedding guests. It was a great time… Thank you Chris and Shannon, for having us along!

Here’s a teaser of some of the images from the day. We ran the gamut from classic stylings to… well, just you wait. You’ll see what craziness Mike cooked up with hilarious results, in the Photo Booth in my next blog post for this wedding.

In the meantime…

Bridal Session with Danielle

Danielle and I have worked together before. She’s a wonderfully talented dancer, actress and model and I’ve always enjoyed working with her. That said, she thought I was completely nuts when I suggested that doing a bridal session at Eastern State Penitentiary was a good idea. She later admitted that she thought weddings or anything bridal just didn’t seem like a good mix with a prison that is quite possibly more notorious today than it was when it was opened. But I needed to prove a concept and I really thought she was the right person to help me do that. Thankfully she trusted me. All in all we ended up with hundred of good solid images and I’m hoping my future couples see these images and…well… trust me to do their bridal portraiture there in the future.

I can’t take full credit for this idea. It’s not original. In fact, I joined Cliff Mautner there during his Lighting Bootcamp last year. I have now been there about once every two months or so since. Some of the images that scroll at the top of this blog are from there.

If you are one of my couples and are interested in booking your engagement, bridal or “Trash the Dress” session at ESP, please get in touch with me right away. Every time I’m there I see new and interested spots to use. The texture and light is simply amazing.

Trust me. :-)

The Fabulous Ms Dena

Dena is one of those fabulously photographable people.  Here’s a few personal favorites from a recent session with her.  I kind of have to laugh when I think of the fiasco  that occurred just before I saw her that day….  Needless to say, I showed up 40 minutes late, limping a little and had to change my clothes 2 times on my way.  But boy, once we got going it was so much fun.  Thank you, Dena… You are absolutely amazing!

As I go and hold my breath….

My husband decided we needed a vacation. I love him for that. I do… But as it turns out we’ll be without communication with the outside world for days on end. Wait. What? No TV??? No cell, no internet? Seriously?

I’m not sure I’m going to make it.

But he’s right. I need this too. For the next 10 days I will be in some canyon or another in AZ with my fabulous husband, doing nothing but watching for birds and hiking… Oh and I get to meet up with an old friend whom I’ve lost track of the past 25 years. Can’t wait for that!

But now I hear that swine flu is now a real concern. Ya think I may have found my out and I get to stay here and keep working 14- 16 hour days? Hmmmm. Probably not. Just can’t tell you how much I look forward to being on a plane… or 4 the next week and a half now.

So… Yes, I will board the plane at some point, very early tomorrow morning, and will be pretty much out of pocket until I return to normal studio hours on May 8th. I’ll be all rested up and ready for a fabulous wedding at the beach that weekend!!!

Now… let’s just all keep positive thoughts for an end to the swine flu pandemic.

Dwayne.

Dwayne and I have worked together many times. It’s about time he gets his own blog post. Seriously? It’s past time. I cannot tell you how much I enjoy working with him and the countless images of him I have adored since I’ve known him. He’s a champ and works so much harder than I do when we’re together. He’s even lugged gear for me. I’m not kidding. I joked that it was to help build up those muscles of his, but in truth it’s because he’s got a huge heart. An amazing and wonderful heart.

These were taken yesterday. Just he and I in the studio. I’ll be posting many of him in the coming months, but here’s a teaser and a couple favorites of mine. Still have lots more to sort through.

Mary and Zachary, Betrothed

On Sunday Mary, Zach and I headed out for their Engagement Session. We couldn’t have had a nicer day. Seriously. 70 degrees and sunny is my kind of day!! We trekked all over Philadelphia too, enjoying every minute of it. We started at Valley Green then headed to The Philadelphia Water Works, where the good City Patrol Officer came over to let us know that we’d need a permit to continue shooting. Bummer. So, we wandered around and took advantage of the blooming trees and then off to Dock Street and surrounding blocks to get the last of the sun bouncing off this amazing bank building.

These two are so much fun and absolutely adorable. I cannot wait until their wedding. There’s something special about two people who are really just so amazing together and madly in love. It’s just…well really beautiful. Meet Mary and Zach. Ain’t love grand?

We got so many amazing pictures that picking a handful for the blog was difficult. I still have so many more to go through. For now, though… a teaser. Here’s a handful to enjoy while I finish up the rest.

Not Your Ordinary Sunday Afternoon

This family was awesome. Too seldom do I get to actually include dad in the family sessions I do for OpLove. This is one of those wonderful exceptions. We were able to get into the base and enter the area where they train mechanics to repair transport vehicles of all types. There were Humvees of various degrees of disrepair, waiting for the next day when trainees would come and disassemble and reassemble them. I took Gary Caunitus along as my assistant for this one, as I knew we’d have some lighting tricks to pull off. He’s 6′4″ and the best voice activated light stand ever. Seriously, thanks, Gary.

This family was so much fun. Although the pictures I selected to highlight here have a bit more of a serious connotation to them, the entire day was not so. Gotta love a mom who teaches her son how to do a WWF headlock (with sound effects). I even learned a thing or two from her. I’ll apologize in advance to my husband if I feel the urge to practice some.

Without further adieu…

One Indian Summer Day

Crazy weather we’ve been having this winter. We had a couple days in the 60’s and then yesterday we got 7 or 8 inches of snow. This is from one of those 60 degree days. I had the distinct honor of meeting this family as the snow of the previous storm had been melting away and it was the first sunny day for a good long week. So, what to do with 5 kids with cabin fever…. Hmmm.. Go outside and play of course!! And that we did. Everyone of us came home good and dirty and flushed with fresh air. We found ice to break, places to hide and a hill to roll on. Among other things.

The image toward the bottom of the young man carrying his sister on his back deserves a note. She was rolling and having a great time with the others but suddenly she had a tough time breathing. Without missing a beat, this amazing kid swept up his little sister on his back and ran her all the way home so she could get her treatment. He’s 13.

Have I mentioned yet that I just love this family? I can’t even begin to tell you how much I enjoyed them and our day together. The next time I’ll see them will be when the missing member of this family returns home from Iraq. He’s serving as an Army Combat Medic. Can’t wait!!

Mary and Zachary at Wissahickon Park

A clear February day and near 60 degree temps made it an ideal day for shooting Mary and Zach’s GTKY Session and we were all set… Except for one little problem.  I woke up with contagious icky eyes (thanks to a hug and kiss from my favoritist 3 year old client ever).  So a couple hours later, this brave couple opted to stay outside (with me at a safe distance) to find rocks, glistening water and the cave anyway.

With the snow melting quickly we slipped and slid a bit in the muddy trails but we did find that cave…eventually.    I cannot wait until their engagement session and wedding now!

Here’s a select few from our day…
